During the Counter-Reformation, a priest of the Inquisition investigates a miller and his son, who are rumored to be working with the Devil and are enjoying unexpected prosperity. This story is the basis of the film The Devil's Trap, directed by František Vlá?il and based on a novel by Alfréd Technik. Set in the late 16th century in the Moravian Karst, the film is a stunning visual masterpiece with remarkable framing, motion, and positioning. Although the story is simple, it is still engaging, and the acting is excellent, particularly from the villains. The music, composed by Zden?k Liška, is also evocative and complements the scenes well. While The Devil's Trap may not be a masterpiece, it is a strong effort that captures a glorious historical setting, making it an excellent starter before watching Vlá?il's more challenging films, Marketa Lazarová and The Valley of the Bees.
