The opening scene features a black screen accompanied by the music of Edgard Varese's \Deserts,\ and then transitions to a middle-aged man sitting on a hill, reciting lines from the end of \Paradiso.\ Giorgio Passerone, an Italian literature professor, delivers the lines in a subtle accent and dialect chosen by the director, Jean-Marie Straub.
